Anafonitria Monastery
The
Holy Monastery of Theotokos Anafonitria (Virgin Mary Anafonitria) is situated
at Pleomonario, NW of Zakynthos, at a distance of 25 kilometres from town. This
monastery was built during the 15th century, by Leonardos Tokkos the
Third and his wife Lappa. Frescoes from the first structural phase of the
church are still salvaged. This is where Saint Dionysios, the Patron Saint of
the island practised asceticism for the largest part of his life.
Saint George’s Monastery at Gremna
This
monastery is situated at NW Zakynthos, and was founded in 1535 by the
priest-monk Makarios and the monk Varlaam Beletis. This is where Saint
Gerasimos practised asceticism (1549-1554). The monastery’s odd tower is saved up
to this day; it begun being built in 1561 and protected the monks from the attacks
of pirates. The monastery was adorned with frescoes by Loukas Romanos (1606). |
